ABOUT the ARTIST
Since childhood, Sheron Smith has possessed a passion for creating three-dimensional structures out of found and available materials. This instinct naturally led her to acrylic mixed-media painting—a discipline whose endless possibilities allow her to engineer high-relief creations using diverse mediums and sustainable materials on canvas or wood cradles.
She continues to produce 3D mixed-media sculptures and enjoys working with clay. Six examples of her mixed-media sculptures are on permanent display at the REACH Health Foundation on Metcalf Avenue in Overland Park.
She also enjoys using colors that move beyond the traditional representational realm. In her abstract mixed-media work, the primary limitation is that every element must be sustainable and capable of standing the test of time. She uses high-density texture gels and heavy-body acrylics, along with natural earth elements such as sand, gravel, and marble powder, finished with high-quality protective materials. Smith often begins a work with a particular color combination in mind. She intentionally pairs opposing color combinations to create strong visual tension, allowing each hue to intensify and heighten the impact of the other.
While Smith deeply respects the tradition of the singular artist who dedicates a lifetime to one medium or stylistic direction, she chooses to honor a different creative calling—one rooted in versatility and boundless curiosity.
She believes that when an artist possesses both the inclination and the inherent talent to cross boundaries, experiment with distinct aesthetics, and speak through multiple visual languages, there should be no artificial ceilings placed upon that expression.
"Creative mastery lies not in restriction, but in having the courage to discover just how far one’s talent can reach."
S. Smith
